Drop by Drop

Jackson Properties, Sacramento, 2015. An installation of over 5,000 hand thrown ceramic drops, 17’ diameter, 17’ deep. Project includes the design of a water feature fountain under the staircase. As the light cascades through skylights, cast shadows move across the walls and floor, depending on the season and the time of day. In an office building, the space has become a place of mediation.

The concept for the project began in 2000, when I visited the home of my Norwegian family, not far from a famous glacier. In 2006, my cousin called me saying that I should visit again: the glaciers are melting, he said, and wouldn’t last our lifetime. So I went back in 2007, and began an obsession with water, following an imaginary drop from the top of the mountain down to the sea.

Now, in 2026, the glacier is almost gone.
